First Day of School

Summer is over and we are back to waking up at 6am.  My middle child, Ava, is starting kindergarten this year.  She loves that she finally gets to ride the bus with her big sister.  That is what she has been waiting for! My kids have always been excited to go to school.  That makes it so much easier on Mom and Dad.  No tears, they just walk right on in while barely waving bye to us.

But there is some separation anxiety.  Not between me and my kids, but me and my friends!  There is a group of my friends that all have kids right around the same age.  I am the only one that has a baby still at home.  Most of their youngest kids are starting kindergarten this year or at least pre-school.  That means many of them returned to work as well.  These are people I am used to seeing every weekday!  We would meet at our YMCA and do our workout every morning.  We would meet for coffee.  We would have regular play dates with the kids.  Meet for book clubs.  Girls nights out for dancing or movie nights or dinner.  Of course, we will still meet for our girls nights and the occasional run at 5am, but my daily routine just isn't the same.  Is it bad that I miss my friends more than my kids?  I need adult interaction and companionship.  Walking into the Y that first day was kind of depressing.  Hitting the treadmill alone was not really what I wanted to do.  Luckily, my friend Aggie was already there.  Chatting with her for a while made me feel much better.  She is actually a food blogger.  Check her out at  I had already considered starting a blog, but talking to her really made me excited to get started.

That first day of school is when I decided that I would actually follow through with my idea and start a blog.  So, here it goes.  Looking forward to the journey!  Hope you can tag along with me!

  1. Oh Melissa, you just put a smile on my face. I can so relate to your feelings...I was looking around the Y and even saying to someone the other day it isn't the same. Gina going to school full time really changed things up for me makes me want to have a baby :) (sometimes, but not really)

Glad we still have each other for those mornings at the Y! This blog is great. You are going to love having a place for a creative outlet. I'm so excited for you!!!

  2. Ok so I finally sat to get on your website and read this. It brought me to tears. Life has changed so much for all of us so fast. The past few years at the Y has created such friendships that will stay with me forever. So...even though our daily lives have changed our friendship will continue to grow. I am so glad that you have come to join our weekly 5am runs. We will always be FIERCE no matter what!! Miss you and Love you!!

  3. Thanks so much! Miss you and Love you too!
