Placemat Purse (or Diaper Clutch!)

I love when you can work with fabric and not have to finish the edges!  I think I'm kind of lazy that way.  It could be because that is where things seem to go crooked for me!  Whatever the reason, I've found that placemats are a great item to transform into something else.

For this project I found a vinyl snakeskin placemat.  I actually found it at Walmart for $3.  You could also use a cotton or quilted placemat.  The other items needed are a large button or toggle, a small thin piece of matching ribbon, and a larger chain.

Fold the placemat into thirds to determine what size you would like your purse and the flap.  Pin the bottom in place and sew up the sides of just the bottom to make the pocket.  Backstitch at the beginning and end.  Try to sew on the existing seams to keep it less noticeable.

Fold the flap over to determine where you should place your button.  Place it just under the flap, on the pocket.  Hand stitch it in place.  Since I had a plain placemat, I went with a fun, sparkly button.  Choose any button that goes with your print.  Make sure the button is large enough for you to use as a toggle with your ribbon.

Now take a small loop of your ribbon and stitch it in place on the underside of your flap.  The loop should be a little larger than your button to make it slide on easily, but not too loose.

Now you can either use your purse as a clutch or add a chain strap.  I found a chain in the jewelry section of my craft store.  I attached one end of the chain to the other to create a large chain loop.  Simply open the flap of your purse and place the chain in the fold and close it again.  Keep it in place by quickly handstitching the chain in place at either edge.  Instead of a plain chain, you could also use a long necklace that you already have on hand.  Switch out necklaces to give your purse a different look!

Unfortunately, I don't carry a purse too often.  It's usually just my diaper backpack.  But this will be perfect for a diaper clutch!  Throw in a couple of diapers, wipes and maybe a changing pad and we are ready to head out for a quick trip.  The great thing about the vinyl is that it wipes clean!    Stay tuned for more great placemat transformations!
